The Why Behind the Work (Artist Statement)
As an artist of the South Asian-Indian diaspora with multiple cultural identities—a dual citizen, immigrant, global citizen, a mother, and, above all, a human being—I keenly observe the human experience through all these lenses. My work is a commitment to telling the stories that go unheard and are cast aside. By posing bold questions that awaken human consciousness, I strive to remind all to confront harsh realities rather than remain silent bystanders.
Inhabiting this beautiful planet alongside incredible fellow human beings from all walks of life has fueled my journey as an artivist—an artist-activist. The diversity of experiences, cultural norms, and stories within our world fascinates me, yet it coexists with persistent oppression and inequality. As a feminist, I stand in opposition to Hindu fundamentalism, white supremacy, nationalist sentiments, and patriarchal ideologies. Equally troubling is the extent to which we are willing to abuse and destroy our only home, Mother Earth, driven by greed and irresponsibility
My art is a platform for challenging these oppressive forces and encouraging a shift toward equality, justice, and inclusivity. I elevate thought-provoking stories, stimulate contemplation, and propel action through provocative sensory sculptures and installations. I transform ordinary objects into compelling works of art, utilize sculpted ceramics, cast bronzes, aluminum, extensively drilled or nailed wood, and found objects to convey the complexity of these issues. As an artist from the diaspora, my work is informed by my South Asian-Indian aesthetics, with a deep connection to traditional textiles and contemporary Western Art. This fusion allows me to create a visual language that transcends cultural boundaries, fostering a dialogue that speaks to our shared humanity. Drawing inspiration from the Bhagavad Gita, my artistic philosophy aligns with the idea that I have the right to work but no attachment to the fruits of that work. This ancient wisdom encourages me to focus on the process, emphasizing the importance of action over outcomes. I am committed to pushing intellectual and physical boundaries and expanding the reach of my art beyond what is easy or comfortable. The labor-intensive nature of my work reflects a desire to explore the endless possibilities and contradictions inherent in our world, where we can expand perspectives, challenge norms, and inspire positive transformation by becoming and facing our shared humanity to create a more just and sustainable world.
